What is Scoliosis?
Scoliosis is a condition that affects your spine. It is defined as an abnormal curvature of the vertebrae. This condition can cause physiological problems along with pain and discomfort. People with the condition have spines that curve to one side or in an S shape rather than being in a natural straight line.
Scoliosis is quite common with approximately 2-3% of the global population suffering from this condition. Hollywood actress ‘Sarah Michelle Gellar’ suffers from scoliosis and so does Olympic gold medalist ‘Usain Bolt’. They both use specific training such as core strength building exercises to help manage their condition.
There is not yet a cure for scoliosis. However remedial massage therapy can help sufferers with their musculoskeletal pain and discomfort. Remedial massage can increase patients mobility by helping the spine and surrounding muscles to relax by increasing blood flow and circulation and elongating tight muscle fibres and releasing trigger points.
How do I know if I have Scoliosis
A doctor or health professional can do an assessment to determine whether you have scoliosis simply by looking at the curvature of your spine. If it forms an S shape rather than a straight line then this is a very obvious indicator. Other symptoms may include:
- Having trouble breathing deeply.
- Soreness and/or tightness along your back and spine.
- Having one hip or shoulder higher than the other.
Scoliosis is a condition that you are born with, however it can get worse if you have poor posture and lack core strength.
